Tomorrow the Josh McDowell Institute (JMI) Conference begins, and in case you want to research the speakers before they are here, here are a few introductions to prepare you:
Ryan T. Anderson
Ryan Anderson writes about marriage and religious liberty at The Heritage Foundation. He was part of a debate on “Piers Morgan Live” and he has appeared on CNN, Fox News Channel, and MSNBC. His work has been featured in New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Washington Examiner, National Review, Weekly Standard and Christianity Today. His research spans the natural law tradition in conversation with classical and contemporary liberalism. He is the co-author with Princeton’s Robert P. George and Sherif Girgis of the acclaimed book “What Is Marriage? Man and Woman: A Defense” (Encounter Books, December 2012). Justice Samuel Alito cited the book twice in his dissenting opinion in the Supreme Court case involving the Defense of Marriage Act.
In 1999, Rosaria Butterfield converted to Christianity and began what she has described as a long road of searching for God. She began to study the Bible with Ken and Floy Smith, and one day realized what everyone who has truly converted also realizes; we have no authority to interrogate the Bible, but the Bible has the authority to interrogate us. She began documenting her transformation and that resulted in one of her books, Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert. In her book, she details in a refreshingly honest manner the reality of what it means to die to ourselves and live in Christ. She writes on her website, “[I]f Christians do not demonstrate to a watching world our willing submission to the Lord, and our understanding that we do not have it all together, but rather, require daily washing in the word and daily repentance, why should anyone take our testimony seriously?”. She has written for The Gospel Coalition, the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, Christianity Today, and more. She has several videos of her speeches and interviews on her website for those not fond of reading.
Abdu is the President and co-founder of Embrace the Truth International, an apologetics ministry dedicated to offering the Truth of the Gospel to Muslims, Jews, cult members, and skeptics. For most of his life, Abdu was a proud Muslim who studied the Qur’an and Islam. After a years-long investigation into the historical and philosophical underpinnings of the major world religions and views, Abdu discovered that only the evidence for the historic Christian faith could withstand the toughest challenges. The results of Abdu’s intense search, coupled with the Lord’s drawing of his heart, led him to put his faith in Jesus as the one and only Savior. Since that time, Abdu has dedicated his ministry to thoughtfully engaging non-Christians with the Gospel and equipping Christians to do the same.
Students: Locations and schedule for the individual school breakout sessions during the JMI Conference should be in your student email.
