Pursuing God Brings Never Ending Joy

What is it that Christians are supposed to do?  It seems as if it is just to have faith in God, accept Jesus as our Savior, and be good people.  Yeah, we need to read our Bible and pray, but what does any of that even mean?  There are several things, if looked at closely, in the Bible and teachings from the church fathers that we can learn.  There is one thing in particular that needs to be focused on.  Pursuit.

This happens every day, all over the world, in every single persons life.  People are pursuing dreams, education, jobs, significant others, and many other things.  One thing that is an integral part of each and every person pursuit is happiness.  No matter what is happening, where you are in life, or what your plans are, being happy is the goal of most people.

The fickle thing in all this is, no matter what happens happiness in your job or the family you are trying to create will end.  Anything of this world will be gone and a new cycle will begin, all of the plans of joy will end.  Everything is man made—the pursuit of worldly things. But when man starts to pursue God, things change.  In Psalms it tells us all about what the Pursuit of God will give us and in what things our pursuit should focus.

Psalms 19:7-9 “The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul.  The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple.  The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart.  The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.  The Fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever.  The decrees of the LORD are firm, and all of them are righteous.”

“The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul.  The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple.”

The law that God has given is perfect and in the hard times, when the pursuit of worldly things has failed us, His perfect law is refreshing.  When we are looking to make the right decision we only need to remember that God is trustworthy in every situation, giving us His wisdom.

“The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart.  The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.”

When we are searching for that joy everyone seeks, it is in the precepts and commands God has given us.  If we follow what He says there will be joy and happiness in our lives.  Instead of following what the world has set for us, God has already set standards and ways that will lead to happiness.

The Fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever.  The decrees of the LORD are firm,
and all of them are righteous.

In our pursuit of God there needs to be fear.  This is the Maker of the heavens and the earth, the Maker of our entire being.  This fear endures forever. God will never quit giving us joy from following his precepts and laws. In Matthew 5:6 it says, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be filled.”

Pursuing God will bring never-ending refreshment, joy, fear, and righteousness.  In everyday life, we will pursue many things that will end in us trying to reach the happiness that we want, but in the end only God can give us what we desire. So why not pursue Him?
