“What could beat good coffee, good music, and good books?”
On the first Friday of every month, Outpost Coffee hosts their now regular open mic night. This month, the event was highlighted with the addition of Oklahoma Wesleyan University’s Dr. Joshua McNall, who was celebrating the launch of his new book Long Story Short. An introductory primer to his New Testament class and a breakdown of the complete narrative of the Bible, Long Story Short simplifies the story of the Bible into six movements. Those performing music at the open mic event also included members of OKWU such as Gabe and Lauralyn Belden, and Liam Watts. Between Dr. McNall’s book launch, and a packed house, November 2nd was another great day for coffee, music, literature, and friends.
Josh Wright, the host of all Outpost Coffee’s open mics, opened the floor with some familiar numbers from bands like Dave Matthews Band. Liam Watts followed up with a couple of acoustic originals. The next few acts were uniquely exciting because they featured group performances. A set of country rock was followed by a set of contemporary worship. This was the first time anyone has ever done worship at an Outpost Coffee open mic, and it was incredible to see the response from the audience. Everyone could feel the shift in the atmosphere. Gabe and Lauralyn Belden performed a series of duets, including the songs Perfect by Ed Sheeran and Have You Ever Seen the Rain by Creedence Clearwater Revival.
Music continued playing late into the night with new performers cycling in and out until about 10pm. Dr. McNall described the event as “a lot of fun, and the turnout was great. It was great to meet lots of folks who were interested in learning more about God’s story in the Bible through my book.” Noah Storkson said, “What could beat good coffee, good music, and good books?” As always, the open mic night at Outpost Coffee was a great time, and something everyone should mark on their calendars for next time.
